Wedding Favors - What Works and What Doesn't?

From build your own candy bags to commemorative candle holders or coasters to seed packets or tea sachets to personalized bonbons that signify the new couple's "unique flavor," most American wedding guests don't go home empty handed these days. Instead, the wedding favor has become nearly as ubiquitous at the American wedding as the wedding cake itself. As you plan your wedding you will no doubt read a great many 'blogs, top ten lists, product descriptions, and the like that will tell you that a personalized, inscribed something-or-other with you and your partner's name and the date of your special event will be a "keepsake your guests will cherish for years to come," or something similar.

As you read those words over and over again, and as you start to think about your wedding favors, ask yourself how many other people's wedding favors you have on display in your home. Ask yourself how many times you've seen wedding favors proudly displayed in the curio cabinets or on the walls or coffee tables of your friends and neighbors. If the answer to that question is more than zero then you need new friends and neighbors. Here is the truth: Despite what Party City and the rest of the gazillion dollar per year keepsake wedding and party favor industry would have you believe, if you can't eat it, drink it or plant it, your cherished keepsake favor is getting chucked in a closet or the trash at the earliest possible opportunity. It's not that your guests aren't happy for you. It's not that they don't want to remember your special day. It's simply that most people don't want their home filled with $2 per guest candle holders that proudly proclaim "Jonathan and Summer, Sept 27, 2012, Love in Aruba."

This is not to say that I am anti-wedding favor. To the contrary, guests appreciate a little something to take home to remind them of the good times had at the fabulous party you threw in celebration of your union. BUT - guests also appreciate a favor that is consumable. Choose something that is edible, drinkable, plant-able, or otherwise disposable. Hearkening back to a previous post, a nicely tied bag of five Jordan Almonds, symbolizing five good wishes for guests and new couple alike, is both a simple and an elegant thought for your guests to leave with.

If you yearn for your guests to have something more permanent to remember your special day by, consider a seed packet in a personalized envelope. Self-seeding wildflowers will brighten a flower bed or backyard for years to come, and those cheerful flowers can remind your guests of the happy day of your union over and over again with no need for a cheesy inscription on a frosted candle holder. For the DIY couple, start some seedlings ahead of time and decorate the small flower pots with ribbons in your wedding colors. Guests will enjoy taking home a small, blooming token of your love, and the flowers placed around the tables can add extra color and blooms to your tablescapes for minimal additional cost. These options, in addition to your standard personalized candy, cookies, tea blends, etc., are just a few ideas to keep in mind. Just remember when you are choosing your wedding favors that while you and your family will want to look at photographs and keepsakes of your wedding day for years to come and remember and relive every moment, if wedding guests did the same thing for every wedding that we attended, no one would do anything but reminisce about other people's weddings.
